Respect
Teachers should honor the backgrounds of ELL children in the classroom. They should consider their languages and cultures as fits to the classroom and set out to discover everything they can about what these children already have in place (Allyn, 2013, p.117) |
Access
Teachers should share the English language in authentic and natural ways with a lot of support in vocabulary (Allyn, 2013, p. 117). We should add more supports and provide rich reading resources for all students according to Allyn (2013, p.117). |
Stories
Allowing ELL students to share their stories allows them to be able to extend their emerging literacies, support their stories through drawings, photos and wordless books. If they are seeking to communicate with others, their motivation to learn the English language will be increased (Allyn, 2013, p. 118) |
Culture
Teachers should honor the cultures of their students in the classrooms. According to Allyn (2013), teachers should ask families questions about their culture, letting the students share about their culture, and celebrating their culture by putting it on display in the classroom (p. 118). |
Love
According to Allyn (2013), teachers should share their love the child and their stories, language and the English Language that will help them learn (p. 118). Teachers should also show their love for learning and for the language and not to discourage students from using their home language. |
Good Language Arts Instruction = Good English Language Learner Instruction
"Rich Literacy experiences are the best ways for them to develop both literacy and language" - Pam Allyn (2013, p. 120)
- Explore the richness of language by reading aloud every day, posting new language on classroom walls, visualizing vocabulary and singing, chanting or reading poetry (Allyn, 2013, p.120)
- Expose the students to the diversity of genre by providing the ELL child with book baggies, providing books in their native language, reading aloud from all genres, inviting the children to respond through drawings and drama and deepening the child's vocabulary knowledge in a variety of content areas (Allyn, 2013, p. 120)
- Help the students to read deeply by not allowing them to miss key literacy experiences, giving them book with a lower text complexity but allowing them to discuss about the text in a deep/high level way and give the ELL students chances to respond to texts in ways that are comfortable to them ( Allyn, 2013, p. 120)
