New Standard in 5th Grade That Will Impact Instruction
In Standard 9 of informational texts, they added “several” texts to the standard that states: Integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably. This means the students will have to use information from several texts, rather than just one text, when they are researching, writing or speaking about a topic. Therefore, I will have to collect more informational texts on my own or from the library to support my students learning of this standard. I will have to assist them in finding texts that support their topic and require them to use more than one text to find useful information.

Strategies to Support Learning to Read Informational TextRead-alouds give students opportunities to learn from complex informational texts by allowing them to hear the teacher read and discuss the information with the class. Through read alouds the teacher can explicitly teach the text structure, use think sheets or prompt cards to go along with the text and use modeling and guided feedback to help support their learning.
